New lifters usually find it difficult to learn the Snatch. They have a hard time learning how to drop into the squat position.
By practicing with the empty bar, the snatch can be learned in a few weeks. After that, weight should be added very gradually to the bar; 2.5 kilos each workout is enough.
Before you build up enough confidence to do a heavy Snatch, you will be able to power snatch more than you can squat snatch. I ran into this dilemma years ago. So what I did was to squat only low enough to catch the weight--sort of a power snatch. After much more practice I could catch the bar while almost sitting on my heels. It became second nature to drop all the way down.
But, by taking this shortcut I was able to enjoy entering lifting contests until I learned the correct form.
